Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement regarding Governor Mike Pence’s announcement that he will direct the Indiana legislature to issue a clarification to SB 101, a law that if permitted to go into effect as written will serve as a vehicle for discrimination based on sexual orientation:

“SB 101, in its current form, poses a direct threat to the unity, tolerance and equality of not only the state of Indiana, but of the entire country. By permitting individuals and businesses to discriminate against specific groups based on religious beliefs, this legislation not only sanctions discrimination, but enshrines it into state law. Our nation, which serves as a model of tolerance, egalitarianism and hope for the entire world, can only truly prosper when all of its citizens are guaranteed equal rights and equal protection under the law.”
